Ian Kelly's The Gates of Kyiv鈥攁 combination of storytelling, music, and dance鈥攚ill make its world premiere September 4鈥14 at the Theatre Royal Windsor.
Directed by Roxana Silbert and choreographed by Kenneth Tindall, the production will be narrated by Tony winner Stockard Channing (Joe Egg, Six Degrees of Separation, The West Wing) as Maria Yudina and Michael Praed (42nd Street, Staggered, War of the Worlds) as Shostakovich. They will be joined by Italian-based Russian pianist Gala Chistiakova and international ballet star Xander Parish.
The Gates of Kyiv explores the life of the Soviet piano virtuoso Maria Yudina, the
fearless protestor who was fiercely defiant of the
repressive regime of Joseph Stalin; she publicly denounced him and his
regime, yet somehow, she lived.
The production will conclude with Yudina's famous and furious rendition of Mussorgsky鈥檚 Great Gate of Kyiv. On the 150th anniversary of the piece鈥檚 writing, Kyiv stands defiant against Russian invasion.
The production will also have design by Ti Green, lighting design by Rick Fisher, sound design by Fred De Faye, and video design by Louis Price.
Bill Kenwright LTD produces in association with Oxana Symonds and George Fenton for BEMUSE Performing Arts UK.
