Natalie Margolin's new play All Nighter officially opens Off-Broadway March 9, and it seems the company has become as close as the group of friends they're portraying鈥攎eet the cast in the video above.
Previews began February 25 at MCC Theater's Newman Mills Theater, with performances slated to continue through May 18.
Jaki Bradley directs the work, which follows a tight-knit group of roommates as they pull one last all-nighter to complete their final assignments. Holed up in an old ballroom at their small liberal arts college in rural Pennsylvania, the pressure mounts and the Adderall flows as the truths that bind the group together are put to the test.
The cast features Kristine Froseth (The Buccaneers), Tony nominee Kathryn Gallagher (Jagged Little Pill), Tony nominee Julia Lester (Into the Woods), Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms), and Alyah Chanelle Scott (The Sex Lives of College Girls). Tessa Albertson (Younger) and Olivia Puckett (Dear Evan Hansen) complete the company as understudies.
Several of the cast have become Gen Z favorites in recent film and TV roles鈥擲cott, for example, is a series regular on Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble's The Sex Lives of College Girls, and Liu starred as Ayo Edebiri's love interest in Emma Seligman's 2023 hit comedy Bottoms. This company knows what stories resonate with today's young women, and they say Margolin's script delivers.
"The way [Margolin] writes young women is just so brilliant, and it has a lot of empathy, and patience, and understanding for how their minds work," Scott says. "None of the girls are bad, none of the girls are good, they're all just like where they're at. And I really appreciated that."
"It's really authentic to how I think these women communicate with each other," Froseth adds. "Which is, kind of bad communication."
Margolin says she was searching for this kind of authenticity. "This play for me was really an investigation of...the space of a small liberal arts school, and what it is to be in a very tight-knit group of friends, and investigating how they remained a unit in that setting, and what the cost is of that," she shared. "[It's] working so hard to remain a tight-knit group of friends that you end up shutting off some parts of yourself, and distorting truth a bit."
All Nighter also has scenic design by Wilson Chin (Cost of Living), costume design by Michelle J. Li (Job), lighting design by Ben Stanton (Maybe Happy Ending), and sound design by M.L. Dogg (Gutenberg! The Musical!). Jo Fernandez is the production stage manager.
