Washington, D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre Company has unveiled its upcoming 40th anniversary season, which will include a Wendell Pierce-led Othello, the U.S. premiere of Hamnet, a new revival of Guys and Dolls, and more.
Othello will close the season, running May 19-June 21, 2026, in the company's Harman Hall. Simon Godwin will direct the tragedy, with further casting and creatives to be announced.
Maggie O'Farrell's Hamnet will come to STC following a world premiere at Royal Shakespeare Company and a run in London's West End. Lolita Chakrabarti has adapted O'Farrell's novel, which tracks the grief and recovery of William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, following the loss of their 11-year-old son to the plague. Erica Whyman will again direct after staging the U.K. runs, with further creative team members to be announced. STC will present the production March 17鈥揂pril 12, 2026, in association with Neal Street Productions, with performances in their Harman Hall.
The company's new Guys and Dolls will be directed by Washington National Opera Artistic Director and Broadway Little Mermaid director Francesca Zambello, with Joshua Bergasse (Smash) choreographing. Performances will begin December 2 and continue through January 4, 2026, in Harman Hall, with casting and further creatives to be announced.
The upcoming season will open with Jocelyn Bioh's Merry Wives, a reimagining of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor that premiered at Free Shakespeare in the Park in 2021. The D.C. run will be directed by Taylor Reynolds, with performances September 9-October 5 in Harman Hall.
The company is collaborating with Theatre for a New Audience on a production of Ibsen's The Wild Duck in STC's Klein Theatre October 18-November 16. The work has been adapted by David Eldridge, and will be directed by Simon Goodwin.
Bill Irwin will also bring his On Beckett to the company after its Off-Broadway premiere, with D.C. performances running February 11-March 8, 2026, in the company's Klein Theatre.
