From medieval Germany to the Amazon rainforest, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week:
Yannick N茅zet-S茅guin pulls triple duty this week, as he conducts Florencia en el Amazonas at the Metropolitan Opera, which continues its run through December 14; and also stops by Carnegie Hall for three concerts with two orchestras. November 28, the maestro will lead the Philadelphia Orchestra, of which he is the music director, in a concert of music by Beethoven, Ellington, and more, featuring Itzhak Perlman, Jonathan Biss, and the Isaiah J. Thompson Trio. Then, November 30 and December 1, N茅zet-S茅guin will conduct the Staatskapelle Berlin, filling in for Daniel Barenboim who withdrew due to health reasons. The orchestra presents the complete cycle of Brahms鈥� four symphonies performed across the two days.
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater comes to City Center for five weeks, beginning November 29 and running through December 31. The iconic dance company will present a variety of programs over the course of the month, including world premieres by Amy Hall Garner and Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish. They will also perform classic works from the company鈥檚 repertoire, as well as new productions of Ronald K. Brown鈥檚 Dancing Spirit, Alonzo King鈥檚 Following the Subtle Current Upstream, Jamar Roberts鈥� Ode, and Hans van Manen鈥檚 Solo. To view the full calendar of programs, visit .
The Joyce Theater Foundation in association with Pomegranate Arts presents Dancing With Glass: The Piano Etudes at the Joyce Theater November 28-December 10. The program features a selection of piano etudes by Philip Glass, with choreography by Leonardo Sandoval, Bobbi Jene Smith, Or Schraiber, Chanon Judson, Justin Peck, and Lucinda Childs. Pianist Maki Namekawa accompanies the program, which will also include a selection of unchoreographed etudes.奥补驳苍别谤鈥檚 罢补苍苍丑盲耻蝉别谤 returns to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera November 30, in a revival of Otto Schenk鈥檚 1977 production. Tenor Andreas Schager plays the titular knight who is led away from his calling by the goddess Venus, played by mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova. Soprano Elza van den Heever plays Elizabeth, her second Wagner role at the Met following her performance last season as Senta in Der fliegende Holl盲nder. Baritone Christian Gerhaher and bass Georg Zeppenfeld round out the cast as Wolfram and Landgradd Hermann respectively. Donald Runnicles conducts.
Sister pianists Katia and Marielle Lab猫que will perform Bryce Dessner鈥檚 Concerto for Two Pianos with the New York Philharmonic November 30-December 2. Conducted by Semyon Bychkov, the program will also include Richard Strauss鈥檚 Don Juan, and Rachmaninoff鈥檚 Symphonic Dances.
Tenor Juan Diego Florez performs a recital at Carnegie Hall November 29 with pianist Vincenzo Scalera. The program will include arts songs and arias by Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, and more.
Chamber ensemble Les Violons du Roy will perform at Carnegie Hall November 30, offering a program of Baroque works by Vivaldi, Purcell, Telemann, Rameau, Bach, and more.
