The lineup of readings has been revealed for The New Group's third annual FreeFest, a week-long festival of free readings featuring new works. Curated by the company's Playwright-in-Residence Preston Crowder, the festival will run June 24-28 at Theatre One at Theatre Row.
First in the lineup will be jeremy o'brian's Dingaling, directed by Sideeq Heard. It follows Gummie, a Black queer teen living with a new diagnosis as he is shipped off to a Missisiippi boarding school by his religious mother. There he finds the elite queer clique on campus, the Dingalings, and falls for the leader of the pack, resulting in a fast-paced face-off. The reading will take place June 24 at 4 PM.
The reading of Somebody's Body by C.A. Johnson will be held June 25 at 4 PM. Directed by Knud Adams, it centers on Iris and Tanya, an an artist and a lawyer, who are dating. Iris' curator friend Anthony wants them to break up, and their anthropologist friend Mar might love Iris too, as the four "trauma-bonded millennials" stand on the edge of self-actualization.
Next, Haygen-Brice Walker's Wood will be read June 27 at 4 PM. In it, Rod and Beaux go on their annual hunting trip, accompanied by their younger buddy, Devyn. When a woman named Mo crashes her car not far from the guys' campsite and stumbles upon them, chaos ensues.
Nadia Guevara's The Invisible Hand of God Touched Me In a Bad Place will close out the series, presenting on June 28 at 4 PM. Directed by Nadia Guevara, it follows corporate climber Jaime Ramirez, who has moved his family to Mexico for a lucrative promotion. Unexpectedly, he falls for a queer factory worker leading a labor uprising.
