Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre (AAADT) has selected works by Camille A. Brown, Donald Byrd, AAADT Resident Choreographer Jamar Roberts, and more to be performed during its upcoming season at New York City Center.
The five-week engagement will feature over two dozen pieces and a series of special programs starting December 4.
Tony-nominated choreographer Donald Byrd (The Color Purple) will present the world premiere of Greenwood, inspired by the 1921 Tulsa riots. The 2019 Doris Duke Artist Award recipient debuts the new work December 6.
Ailey鈥檚 first Resident Choreographer, Jamar Roberts, holds a world premiere December 10 with Ode. Featuring a jazz score and six dancers, Ode is an introspective on gun violence and fragility. Roberts will also serve as costume designer for the piece. City of Rain by Tony nominee Camille A. Brown (Choir Boy) will make its company debut December 17.
鈥淐ontinuing the Company鈥檚 legacy of excellence, works will be staged by three dance masters while we also showcase the artistry of some of today鈥檚 most sought-after choreographers following in their footsteps,鈥� said Artistic Director Robert Battle.
Additional performances include the company premiere of Aszure Barton鈥檚 Busk and new AAADT productions of Judith Jamison鈥檚 Divining and Lar Lubovitch鈥檚 Fandango. The opening gala will honor philanthropist and Wynn Resorts co-founder Elaine Wynn December 4. Additional celebrations include Ailey School鈥檚 50th anniversary on December 10 and departing AAADT Associate Artistic Director Masazumi Chaya December 22nd.
