SHOW SYNOPSIS:

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

Character List

NARRATOR: Female 20-45 (Range: Mezzo-Belter, B3-G5)

A storyteller who is sharing a wonderful tale with the children, their families and the wider audience. She needs to be a strong singer, who can draw the audience into the biblical saga of Joseph and his brothers, showing what shapes them into the men they were destined to become.

JOSEPH: Male 20-35 (Range: Tenor, B2 to G4 )

Obviously, his father鈥檚 favorite, Joseph, early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. This gets him into trouble with his brothers when he predicts his future will include ruling over the other eleven.

JACOB/POTIPHAR (Range: Baritone, D2-B3)

The patriarch of the Israelites, he has 12 sons. Joseph鈥檚 mother, now deceased, was Jacob鈥檚 favorite wife. Doting and affectionate, he shows favor to Joseph above all others. To double as Potiphar, a powerful and rich Egyptian, Potiphar purchases Joseph and puts him to work in his household, where he soon realizes that Joseph is honest, hard-working, and a great addition to his pool of help.

BROTHERS OF JOSEPH: REUBEN/ SIMEON/ JUDAH/ LEVI/ DAN/ NAPTHALI/ GAD/ ASHER/ ISSACHAR/ ZEBULUN/ BENJAMIN (Range: Tenor/Baritone, C3-F4)

Sons of Jacob, by Leah. Although acting usually as a group, they each have their own different personalities, talents, and flaws. As a group, they sell Joseph into slavery, but as individuals, they deal with the following years and how they can make amends. They sing and dance their way through many situations and places. Dancer or strong mover.

MRS POTIPHAR

Beautiful and scheming, Mrs. Potiphar tries to seduce Joseph, but is unsuccessful. Preferably a dancer.

PHAROAH Male 20-40 (Range: B2-G4)

The most powerful man in Egypt, Pharaoh is considered a god on earth. When Joseph interprets his dreams, he promotes him to one of the highest positions in his government. In most productions, Pharaoh is portrayed as an Elvis Presley-style figure.
