DESCRIPTION
Kansas City Repertory Theatre, led by Artistic Director Stuart Carden and Executive Director Jeremy Dewey, is a vibrant regional theater with a 60-year legacy of artistic excellence. As the professional theatre in residence at the University of Missouri鈥揔ansas City (UMKC), KCRep is committed to producing transformative theatrical experiences for our community.
Our performance venues include Spencer Theatre, a 550-seat modified thrust stage located in the Olson Performing Arts Center on the UMKC campus, and Copaken Stage, a 319-seat LORT D theatre located in the H&R Block world headquarters in downtown Kansas City.
KCRep鈥檚 season currently features three mainstage productions鈥攊ncluding our beloved annual presentation of A Christmas Carol鈥攖wo off-campus productions, a free community tour, and ongoing new works development initiatives.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Stage Carpenter is responsible for the construction, installation, and strike of scenery for all KCRep productions, as well as maintenance, support and communication through show runs. This position involves collaboration with the technical team and requires advanced carpentry skills, adherence to safety practices, and the ability to adapt to evolving production needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
鈥uild and install scenic elements using traditional and advanced theatrical construction techniques
鈥ork with materials such as wood, metal, and plastics; operate a variety of tools and equipment safely
鈥upport rigging, soft goods installation, and on-site assembly as required
鈥articipate in load-ins and strikes for KCRep productions and events
鈥ollow technical drawings and collaborate with Technical Director, ATD, and Head Carpenter
鈥aintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace
鈥se proper PPE and ensure adherence to shop safety protocols
鈥upport KCRep鈥檚 mission, vision, and values, and contribute to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-racism) efforts
PRODUCTION RUN AND DECK MANAGEMENT DUTIES
鈥� Arrive 15 minutes prior to call to unlock all necessary areas:
- Green Room
- Dressing Rooms
- Theatre
- Trap Room (as needed)
鈥� Coordinate backstage crew assignments in partnership with the Assistant Stage Manager (ASM)
鈥� Oversee deck operations in collaboration with the ASM
鈥� Set up and break down tech tables
鈥� Manage theatre lighting before and after rehearsals and performances, including ghost light usage
鈥� Assist lighting and sound departments with deck-related needs
鈥� Act as liaison between stage management and the scene shop
鈥� Install backstage carpeting where required
鈥� Set up quick-change areas as needed
鈥� Establish and maintain mopping schedule (including waxed/non-waxed floor procedures)
鈥� Supervise rail operations, ensuring safe and efficient use
鈥� Ensure a safe and hazard-free deck and props environment for cast and crew
MAINTENANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
鈥� Props Maintenance:
- Monitor and maintain weapon props
- Address broken or damaged props during the run
- Replace batteries for battery-operated props (including A Christmas Carol [ACC])
- Refill and inspect air tanks and water tanks
鈥� Scenic Maintenance:
- Perform paint touch-ups as needed
- Monitor and reset scenic traps
QUALIFICATIONS
鈥xperience working in professional theatrical scene shops or a related setting
鈥roficiency in reading technical drawings and executing carpentry plans
鈥amiliarity with finish carpentry, welding, rigging, and theatrical construction
鈥bility to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment with or without reasonable accommodation
鈥omfortable working on ladders, personnel lifts, and in various shop or theater environments
