Alex Newell, Lillias White and Sidney DuPont are lined up to perform at the 2023 Theatre Communications Group Gala January 9. The annual gala celebrates The Theatre Communications Group's work in leading for a just and thriving theatre ecology through their numerous programs and services. The organization serves as North America's largest independent trade publisher of dramatic literature.

This year, The Gala will also celebrate the launch of TCG鈥檚 One Million Books Campaign, which will make one million TCG plays available to schools, libraries, community centers, independent bookstores, and more. The book program, which commits to the life-long career of its playwrights, keeping all of their plays in print, features the work of Annie Baker, Nilo Cruz, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Larissa FastHorse, Athol Fugard, Quiara Alegr铆a Hudes, David Henry Hwang, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Tony Kushner, Young Jean Lee, Lynn Nottage, Suzan-Lori Parks, Sarah Ruhl, Heidi Schreck, Stephen Sondheim, Paula Vogel, and August Wilson.

The evening will commence with a cocktail gala, then, a seated dinner will begin shortly before the evening's entertainment. DuPont will perform, followed by a set from  White, accompanied by pianist Mathis Picard, sharing a preview of their upcoming Sarah Vaughan tribute album.

The 2023 gala honors Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson Jackson, the actor-and-director husband-and-wife duo behind Broadway's current revival of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson.

Co-chairs of the gala are Broadway producer Brian Anthony Moreland and theatre publicist and past honoree Rick Miramontez.

鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled to honor the iconic talents of philanthropists and humanitarians Samuel and LaTanya Richardson Jackson during their Broadway run of August Wilson鈥檚 Pulitzer Prize-winning play,鈥 said Teresa Eyring, executive director and CEO of TCG. 鈥淭CG had a long and deep relationship with Mr. Wilson. His transformational speech, The Ground on Which I Stand, was first delivered at the 1996 TCG National Conference, and in 2007, TCG Books was honored to publish his American Century Cycle in a gorgeous, hard-cover boxed set. The Gala will also be an opportunity to lift up TCG Books鈥 One Million Books Campaign, ensuring readers across the country will have access to not only Wilson鈥檚 plays, but TCG Books' extensive library of titles.鈥
