Off-Broadway's Red Bull Theater has announced the lineup for the fourth installment of their Hispanic Golden Age Classics series. This year they will examine Don Quixote, both in English and Spanish, to kick off the company鈥檚 full 2023-2024 Season.
Presented in collaboration with Repertorio Espa帽ol and Diversifying the Classics | UCLA, there will be three events throughout September and October, focusing on Guill茅n de Castro's theatrical adaptation of the classic novel. The series is supported by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain.
"All of us at Red Bull are excited to announce the programs for our upcoming Hispanic Golden Age Classics program, as part of our ongoing mission to revitalize the classics for today鈥檚 audiences. We鈥檙e delighted to be collaborating with Repertorio Espa帽ol, and partnering again with UCLA鈥檚 Diversifying the Classics鈥攕upporting their efforts to expand the canon of classical plays. In addition to being able to share the work globally via livestream, this is our first time being able to do this program live and in person, which will be wonderful!鈥 said Red Bull founder and artistic director Jesse Berger.
Described by Red Bull, "The Hispanic Golden Age offers one of the most vibrant theatrical repertoires ever produced. At the same time that England saw the flourishing of Shakespeare on the Elizabethan and Jacobean stage and in the decades that followed, Spanish-speaking playwrights including Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Ana Caro, Sor Juana, and Calder贸n de la Barca flourished on the continent and in the New World. Many of the works created during this time have still not been translated into English."
Guill茅n de Castro鈥檚 theatrical adaptation Don Quixote will be presented in a brand new English translation, as well as in the original Spanish. An online Seminar: Tilting at Windmills: Cervantes, Shakespeare, and the Cultural Significance of Don Quixote, will be held as well, in addition to the Bull Session, an community discussion of the play with members of the creative team.
Diversifying the Classics | UCLA, the group responsible for the translation, includes Marta Albal谩 Pelegr铆n, Barbara Fuchs, Rafael Jaime, Sara铆 Jaramillo, Rachel Kaufman, Robin Kello, Dandi Meng, Laura Mu帽oz, Javier Pati帽o Loira, Amanda Riggle, Rhonda Sharrah, Aina Soley Mateu, Samantha Solis, and Jesslyn Whittell.
