Brooklyn recycling facility Sure We Can will host the world premiere of the new, site-specific play Riven this summer. Written and directed by Marina Zurita and created in collaboration with Laila Garroni and Josanna Vaz, Riven is based on the reality of waste pickers, the global community of people who pick and sort recyclable materials for a living. Performances will begin June 6 ahead of a June 8 opening night.
The cast will include Josanna Vaz as Melina and Dee Beasael as Alessandra. The production will also feature live music by percussion ensemble Mambemb茅, with dancer Daniella Macre.
Riven was developed after a research and interview process documenting the reality of waste pickers in Brazil, though the play aims to raise awareness and give voice to the global community of pickers. The story follows Melina and Alessandra, two black women from the global south working at a waste picking cooperative, where recycled materials are sorted and people are rescued from neglect.
The creative team will include co-director and movement director Acadia barrengos, costume and props designer Patricia Marjorie, marketing director Lu铆sa Galatti, and stage manager Erin Gray. Giorgia Valentin is producing.
