The Old Globe Theatre production of The Age of Innocence officially opens February 15 after beginning performances February 8. Karen Zacar铆as' new adaption of Edith Wharton鈥檚 Pulitzer Prize鈥搘inning novel will play the San Diego venue's Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage through March 10.
Set during the Gilded Age, Wharton's classic novel centers on the moment Countess Ellen Olenska comes to New York City, where high society conflicts with love. Olenska's arrival disrupts the lives of everyone around her鈥攑articularly the dashing lawyer Newland Archer. Chay Yew directs.
The cast includes Callum Adams as Newland Archer, Shereen Ahmed (My Fair Lady) as Ellen, Barzin Akhavan (The Kite Runner) as Beaufort, Delphi Borich (Camelot, Into the Woods) as May, Mahira Kakkar (Life of Pi) as Mrs. Welland and Medora Manson, Eva Kaminsky (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) as Narrator, Rami Margron as Mrs. Archer and Regina Beaufort, Sophia Oberg as Janey Archer, Opera Singer, and Nastasia, Socorro Santiago as Catherine Mingott and Mrs. van der Luyden, Mike Sears as Sillerton Jackson, Mr. Letterblair, and Mr. van der Luyden, and Michael Underhill as Dallas.
Luana Fontes, Chris Hathaway, Madeline Grace Jones, Erick Lindsey, Angelynne Pawaan, Akoni Steinmann, and Emma Svitil serve as understudies.
"Karen has found a vivid theatrical language for Edith Wharton鈥檚 moving and strikingly modern-feeling story, and the great director Chay Yew stages it with energy and dynamism. At the heart of the piece is a love triangle that鈥檚 shot through with passion and aching desire, and Zacar铆as and Yew channel that emotion into a deeply absorbing and entertaining work of theatre," said Artistic Director Barry Edelstein in a statement.
The production also features scenic design by Arnulfo Maldonado, costume design by Susan E. Mickey, lighting design by Lee Fiskness, sound design by Darron L West, voice and dialect coaching by Ursula Meyer, and casting by Caparelliotis Casting and Kelly Gillespie. Jess Slocum will serve as production stage manager.
