The Shed's rescheduled revival of Tarell Alvin McCraney's The Brothers Size has set new dates and revealed casting. Celebrating the work's 20th anniversary, the production will play the Off-Broadway venue's Griffin Theater August 30-September 28, with opening night set for September 10. The co-production with Los Angeles' Geffen Playhouse had initially been announced to run earlier this year. McCraney and Bijan Sheibani will co-direct.
Starring will be Andr茅 Holland (Moonlight) as Ogun Size, Alani iLongwe (Paradise Blue) as Oshoosi Size, and Malcom Mays (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) as Elegba; iLongwe and Mays are both reprising their performances from the revival's Geffen Playhouse run last year.
The work explores themes of brotherhood, resilience, and the complexities of the Black male experience through the story of two brothers navigating life after incarceration. The work is the second in McCraney's Brother/Sister Plays triptych, originally premiering simultaneously at both Off-Broadway's Public Theater (a co-production with Foundry Theatre) and London's Young Vic Theatre in 2007.
"We are incredibly honored to partner with the Geffen Playhouse to bring Tarell Alvin McCraney鈥檚 incredible work, The Brothers Size, to The Shed this fall," says Chief Executive Producer Madani Younis in a statement. "McCraney鈥檚 profound exploration of brotherhood, identity, and the complexities of the Black experience remains a vital and moving story, and we believe this production will offer our audiences a powerful and unforgettable theatrical experience. It鈥檚 a privilege to present such a vital piece of American theatre and to continue our commitment to showcasing groundbreaking artists and narratives in our spaces at The Shed."
"At The Shed, we are committed to presenting theatre that challenges, moves, and reflects the multifaceted experiences of our world," adds Artistic Director Alex Poots. "The Brothers Size, with its raw emotionality and lyrical language, perfectly embodies this mission. We are thrilled to produce, with Geffen Playhouse, this new production and its unique vision, offering a dynamic and immersive encounter with McCraney's profound and significant voice."
