Barrington Stage Company will premiere a new Ahrens and Flaherty revue conceived and directed by Jason Danieley, Something Beautiful, with performances running August 28-31 in the Pittsfield, Massachusetts theatre company's Boyd-Quinson Theater.
The concert will take a reimagined journey through the songbook of the prolific lyricist-composer team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Anastasia, Once on This Island) with new orchestrations and arrangements by Sam Davis.
Set to star are Tony nominee Elizabeth A. Davis (Once), Paula Gaudier, Alan H. Green, and Nathan Salstone (Sweeney Todd).
"Brand-new musical arrangements by Sam Davis, performed by a six-piece band and a cast of four dynamic singer/actor/musicians, create a unique sonic palette that invites the audience to experience their songs in a fresh and reimagined way,鈥 says Danieley in a statement. 鈥淭his special concert event marks the first step in developing a fully realized stage production. It features both well-known songs and lesser-known gems from the writers鈥 catalogue, showcasing the extraordinary breadth of one of Broadway鈥檚 greatest songwriting teams."
As a performer, Danieley does not have an extensive connection to Ahrens and Flaherty musicals, aside from starring in the 2020 world premiere of their Knoxville in Florida. The musical has still not made it to New York. His late wife, Marin Mazzie, created the role of Mother in their seminal Ragtime, and both recorded demos for the songwriting duo frequently throughout their career. In recent years as Danieley has turned his career to directing, he has also helmed concert presentations of Ragtime.
