Tony Awards 'Be Yourself, the Best Stuff Happens': Sam Pinkleton Reflects on His Tony Win

He was recognized for his work on Oh, Mary!

Sam Pinkleton has won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for Oh, Mary! at the 78th Annual Tony Awards. In an exclusive interview with 半岛体育 shortly after bounding off stage at Radio City Music Hall, Pinkleton was overcome with emotion.

"I feel out of body, a little bit. I mean, I feel so deeply, deeply in love with the company of Oh, Mary!, and the whole team that made it, and everyone at the Lyceum. It feels like I hold this truly, truly, truly, for every single person who's worked on the show."

For Pinkleton, theatre was a saving grace. "I was such a theatre nerd. Like, really I am. I am a total cliche, theatre saved my life. I did not know who I was or what was gonna happen to me until I walked into a rehearsal for Godspell when I was 14. Theatre is the only thing I've ever wanted, and I didn't know that this could even be a dream. Honestly...the success of this play, overall, has just been such an incredible validation of 'make the thing that you want,' 'be the person that you actually are.' Cole wrote this entirely as themselves, and making it and working with the collaborators, it's like, 'oh, we're just being ourselves.' And to do that and to have that be recognized on the highest level, is like, 'Oh, maybe we're onto something.' Maybe if you actually just can take a deep breath and be yourself, the best stuff happens."

Oh, Mary! continues at the Lyceum Theatre.
