The Cape Playhouse will launch its summer season June 4 with Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, which will play the Dennis, Massachusetts, venue through June 21.
Directed by Meredith McDonough, the musical about the legendary rock-and-roll pioneer will feature Andy Christopher (Rock & Roll Man) in the title role with Christopher Alvarado, David Bonanno (The Light in the Piazza), Legna Cedillo, Matt Cusack (One Man, Two Guvnors), Gian Raffaele Diconstanzo, Ta鈥橬ika Gibson (Into the Woods), Katie Horner, Jeffrey Thomas Kelly, and Isaiah Reynolds.
Written by Alan Janes, Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story follows Holly鈥檚 meteoric rise to fame, from the moment in 1957 when 鈥淭hat鈥檒l Be the Day鈥� hit the airwaves until his tragic death less than two years later on 鈥渢he day the music died.鈥�
The musical features more than 20 Holly hits, including 鈥淧eggy Sue鈥� and 鈥淥h Boy鈥� plus Ritchie Valens鈥� 鈥淟a Bamba鈥� and the Big Bopper鈥檚 鈥淐hantilly Lace.鈥�
"I'm thrilled to bring the story and the music of Buddy Holly to the Cape this summer! It's jam-packed with not only your favorites from his time with his band, The Crickets, but also so many hits from the era,鈥� said director McDonough in a statement. 鈥淚 love the audience interaction with 'Shout!' and 'La Bamba,' as we get to celebrate this music together. Buddy's story has a tragic end, but this show is a true celebration of his life and all that he left behind in his music."
Buddy played 15 previews and 225 regular performances at Broadway's Shubert Theatre beginning in October 1990. Paul Hipp received a Tony nomination for his performance in the title role.
The production will also have sets by Lex Liang, costumes by Kathleen Geldard, lights by Kat C. Zhou, sound by Jeff Sherwood, choreography by Felicity Stiverson, music direction by Matt Cusack, and casting by Stephanie Klapper. Arthur Atkinson will be the stage manager with Sergio Manriquez as the assistant stage manager.
Prior to the season opener, Company's Claybourne Elder will offer If the Stars Were Mine for three performances May 24-25. Part cabaret and part standup, the solo show also features music director Rodney Busy.
