Following the results of the 2016 presidential election, in which Donald J. Trump was named President-Elect of the United States of America, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling responded passionately over Twitter, retweeting sentiments that Hillary Clinton鈥檚 loss was 鈥渢ragic.鈥�
When asked if she鈥檇 elaborate at the November 10 press conference for her latest film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, she replied, 鈥淗onestly, I don鈥檛 want to say any more specifically about [how] yesterday went down because we鈥檙e here for the movie that we鈥檝e been working hard on, and that I would love to talk about. That, and I think today might be a day for good things鈥� As far as themes are concerned, this story [for Fantastic Beasts] was conceived a few years ago, so I can鈥檛 make any direct relationship to what happened yesterday, but I will say that this first movie shows鈥ive characters, who are drawn to a situation that none of them expected, and as often happens in the Potterverse, they are going to have to make some choices about how they deal with something.鈥�
She continued, 鈥淚f you have read the Potter books, you鈥檒l know that this period in history was threatened to become very dystopian. You were looking at the rise of a very dark force. But, as I said, I conceived of this story a few years ago. And it was partly informed by what I see as a rise of populism around the world, but I can鈥檛 say anything specifically about yesterday鈥︹�
Over Twitter, she responded to those telling her she doesn鈥檛 live in the United States and to mind her own business, and she continuously retweeted quotes from Clinton. Following Clinton鈥檚 concession speech, she said that she 鈥渘eeded to cry.鈥�

When asked about her writing process, Rowling explained that she could write anywhere鈥攅ven, a 鈥渟urprising amount, actually, on the lavatory鈥濃攁nd that she worked on a screenplay for the five-part Fantastic Beasts series yesterday as an escape.
鈥淲e flew out here yesterday evening,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 was in a kind of a bleak mood boarding the plane, and I thought, 鈥業 need to work,鈥� so I got out the second screenplay, and I did some work on that.鈥�
