Good Night, and Good Luck starring George Clooney has been creating new box office records on Broadway thanks to its high ticket prices. For those who can't afford the $300 average ticket price, don鈥檛 worry鈥攖he hit play has announced that it will broadcast its entire June 7 performance live on CNN. The broadcast will take place the night before the 2025 Tony Awards, and the night before the play closes on Broadway.
The live telecast will take place June 7 at 7 PM ET across CNN properties, including a livestream on CNN.com.
The broadcast will also include special pre-show coverage outside of the theatre. Then after the performance, CNN will air a Good Night, and Good Luck special, which will also discuss the fraught state of global journalism.
Said star and co-writer Clooney in a statement: "I can鈥檛 tell you how exciting it is to do something that鈥檚 never been done. CNN is the perfect place to bring this story of courage to so many more people than we could have ever hoped. Live TV. No net. Buckle up everyone.鈥
The broadcast will be executive produced by George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Deena Katz, Todd Wagner, and Jeff Skoll.
鈥Good Night, and Good Luck is not just a celebration of a golden age in TV journalism,鈥 said Chairman and CEO of CNN Mark Thompson in a statement. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also about the importance of the free press and the need for strong news organizations to report the facts in a fair-minded way. That鈥檚 something we still care deeply about.鈥
Though the upcoming broadcast is a rarity, it鈥檚 not without precedent. The 2016 Broadway revival of She Loves Me streamed a live performance, and several productions鈥攊ncluding South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza, and Contact鈥攂roadcast live on PBS via the series Live From Lincoln Center. Even as far back as 1961 a performance of Show Girl, starring Carol Channing, was broadcast live to Canadian pay TV.
A work of historical drama, Good Night, and Good Luck centers on a clash between famed journalist Edward R. Murrow and infamous U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, of anti-communist HUAC fame. The title comes from Murrow's broadcast sign-off.
Clooney also co-wrote the project's 2005 film version with Heslov, and directed and starred as well, as Murrow's co-producer Fred W. Friendly. Clooney is taking on the role of Edward R. Murrow in this stage version, played by David Strathairn on screen. Cromer is directing.
Good Night, and Good Luck recently announced its recoupment on Broadway; it's the first straight play in Broadway history to surpass $4 million in one week.
The production picked up five nominations when the full list of Tony nominees came out May 1, with all of its physical design getting recognition alongside a nod for Clooney as a performer.
In addition to Clooney, Good Night, and Good Luck features Ilana Glazer (Broad City) as Shirley Wershba, Clark Gregg (Agents of Shield) as Don Hollenbeck, Mac Brandt as Colonel Anderson, Will Dagger as Don Hewitt, Christopher Denham as John Aaron, Glenn Fleshler as Fred Friendly, Paul Gross as William F. Paley, Georgia Heers as Ella, Carter Hudson as Joe Wershba, Fran Kranz as Palmer Williams, Jennifer Morris as Millie Green, Michael Nathanson as Eddie Scott, Andrew Polk as Charlie Mack, and Aaron Roman Weiner as Don Surine.
The ensemble includes R. Ward Duffy, Joe Forbrich, Imani Rousselle, Greg Stuhr, JD Taylor, and Sophia Tzougros.
The creative team includes Tony-winning scenic designer Scott Pask, lighting designer Heather Gilbert, video and projections designer David Bengali, sound designer Daniel Kluger, costume designer Brenda Abbandandolo, hair and wig designer Leah J. Loukas, voice and dialect coach Gigi Buffington, music supervisors Daniel Kluger and Bryan Carter, and casting director David Caparelliotis.
