Hello, Dolly!, featuring a book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Herman, is based on Thornton Wilder's play The Matchmaker. The original Broadway production, directed and choreographed by
Champion, premiered January 16, 1964, at the
St. James Theatre, starring Carol Channing. The winner of ten Tony Awards, including
Best Musical, Dolly! has been revived on Broadway
four times, most recently with Bette Midler.
