Writers have been announced for Sam Mendes' four upcoming Beatles biopics, , and some Broadway names are among them.
Tony winner Jez Butterworth, most recently represented on Broadway with 2025 Best Play Tony nominee The Hills of California, Academy Award winner Peter Straughan (Conclave), and Tony winner Jack Thorne (Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) will write the screenplays for the series of films.
Mendes and Butterworth are previous collaborators鈥擬endes directed the recent Broadway run of Butterworth's The Hills of California, which is currently up for seven Tony Awards; and The Ferryman, which ran from 2018-2019 and won the Tony for Best Play. Mendes also directed Thorne's The Motive and the Cue in the West End last year.
Mendes conceived and will direct the four films, which mark the first time The Beatles have granted full life story and music rights to a scripted film. Each will be presented from a different band member's point of view.
Set to star in the films are Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal (recently seen Off-Broadway in A Streetcar Named Desire) as Paul McCartney, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.
The Beatles鈥擜 Four-Film Cinematic Event is a Neal Street production in association with Apple Corps for Sony Pictures. Mendes is producing alongside his Neal Street Productions partner Pippa Harris and Neal Street鈥檚 Julie Pastor. Alexandra Derbyshire (Wonka) is also producing.
