The new play delves into the strength of chosen family through the eyes of Umar, a young gay Black writer residing in New York City during the AIDS epidemic.

Casting has been revealed for The National Black Theater's production of Sweetwater: The Gospel of Iman, a newly commissioned work from NBT鈥檚 Playwright Resident Nathan Yungerberg. It will run at La Mama June 26-June 29.

Zhailon Levingston (Cats: "The Jellicle Ball") will direct the work delving into the strength of chosen family through the eyes of Umar, a young gay Black writer residing in New York City during the AIDS epidemic. 

Jhardon DiShon Milton (Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) and Tor茅e Alexandre (Our Town) will star in the production, which will feature lighting design by Marika Kent, sound design by Christopher Darbassie, costume design by DeShon Elem, scenic design by Izmir Ickbal, choreography by Adesola Osakalumi, and props design by Belynda M鈥橞aye]. R. Christopher Maxwell will serve as production stage manager.

Sweetwater: The Gospel of Iman is the culminating project for Amiah McGinty, NBT's SOUL Producing Resident. The production will be staged as an NBT Public Presentation鈥攁 scaled-back production designed to center the creative process of development that allows playwrights in residences the opportunity to dream without the pressures of criticism. Each performance will conclude with a talkback and a feedback session with the audience.
