Tony Award nominee Louise Pitre (Mamma Mia!) and Jayne Lewis (Young Frankenstein) will co-star in the Toronto premiere of Piaf/Dietrich, A Legendary Affair, which begins previews September 17 at the CAA Theatre.
Gordon Greenberg (Holiday Inn) directs the production, which received its English-language debut under the title The Angel and the Sparrow. Based on the real-life friendship between the two performers, the play with music incorporates over 20 songs associated with Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf, including 鈥淟a Vie En Rose,鈥� 鈥淢ilord,鈥� 鈥淲here Have All the Flowers Gone,鈥� and 鈥淣on, Je Ne Regrette Rien.鈥�
Pitre, who starred as Piaf in the Montreal staging, will reprise her performance opposite Lewis, who joins her as Dietrich. Performances are scheduled through December 8.
The play by Daniel Gro脽e Boymann and Thomas Kahry premiered in Vienna in 2014, where it played an extended, multi-year run. Erin Shields adapted the English-language version from a translation by Sam Madwar.
The cast of Piaf/Dietrich will also feature Louise Camilleri, Rejean Cournoyer, W. Joseph Matheson, Tracy Michailidis, and Seana-Lee Wood.
Jonathan Monro is music director on a creative team that also includes set designer Michael Gianfrancesco, costume designer Louise Bourret, lighting designer Michael Walton, and sound designer Michael Laird.
