Off-Broadway News Matthew LaBanca's Communion Begins Developmental Premiere Off-Broadway at The Cell September 22

The one man show centers on a gay school teacher who is fired from his position at a Catholic School when his sexual orientation is revealed.

Off-Broadway's the cell theatre begins a developmental production of Communion, written and performed by Matthew LaBanca, September 22. The production will continue through September 24.

Inspired by LaBanca's real-life case, Communion is a one-man show centering on when he, a gay school teacher, was is fired from a Catholic school following the discovery of his sexual orientation. Directed by Kira Simring, the work spotlights how religion is twisted to legally discriminate against LGBTQIA+ people, and the spiritual trauma that results.

The developmental production features projection, music and sound by Julianne Merrill; additional projections by Ryan Belock; set and costumes by Rodrigo Hernandez; production stage management by Richard Urquiza; and technical direction by Julian Singer-Corbin.
