Melvin Gray Jr. will join the national tour of MJ the Musical, alternating in the title role twice a week, beginning May 20 at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He will join Jordan Markus, who continues to lead the touring company as the King of Pop.
Gray Jr. was recently seen in the national tour of Ain鈥檛 Too Proud. His regional credits include Bull Durham, Smokey Joe鈥檚 Cafe, Songs for a New World, The Scottsboro Boys, and Newsies.
Also beginning May 20, Bryce A. Holmes, currently playing Little Marlon, will take over the role of Little Michael, and Austin Rankin will join the tour, direct from the Broadway company, as Little Marlon.
The touring company also currently features Erik Hamilton as Michael, Quentin Blanton Jr. as Little Michael, Bane Griffith as Little Michael (through May 18), Devin Bowles as Joseph Jackson/Rob J. Daughtry as Berry Gordy/Nick, Josh A. Dawson as Tito Jackson/Quincy Jones, Anthony J. Garcia as Alejandro, Cecilia Petrush as Rachel, Jed Resnick as Dave, and Anastasia Talley as Katherine Jackson/Kate.
Ensemble members and swings include Ashton Booth, 鈥疛oJo Carmichael, Joshua Dawson, Croix DiIenno, Zuri鈥疦oelle鈥疐ord,鈥�Ui-Seng Fran莽ois, Jahir鈥疞.鈥疕ipps, Skye Jackson-Williams, Faith Jones, Jacobi Kai, Rajan茅 Katurah, Rachel Lockhart, Michaela Marfori, Matteo Marretta, Jay McKenzie, Kendrick Mitchell, Zion Mikhail Pradier, Tyrone Reese, Avilon Trust Tate, Charles P. Way, and Malcolm Miles Young.
MJ began Broadway previews December 6, 2021, at the Neil Simon prior
to an official opening February 1, 2022.
The musical features a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn
Nottage and a score made up of some of the most popular songs in
recording history. Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon directs and choreographs.
MJ also has sets by Derek McLane, lighting by Natasha Katz, costumes by Paul Tazewell, sound design by Gareth Owen, projection design by Peter Nigrini, hair and wig design by Charles LaPointe, music direction by Jason Michael Webb, musical supervision by David Holcenberg, and orchestrations by Holcenberg and Webb. Casting is by Rachel Hoffman of The Telsey Office.
The show took home four Tony Awards in total, including Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost, Best
Choreography, Best Lighting Design in a Musical, and Best Sound Design
in a Musical.
