The private reading, held at Shetler Studios on 54th Street, starred Tony Award nominee (9 to 5, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Thoroughly Modern Millie) as Jack Torrance (the role played in the 1980 film adaptation by Jack Nicholson) and Tony winner (Next to Normal, Side Show) as Wendy Torrance (played on film by Shelley Duvall).
The musical parody garnered attention last year when the creators, writer Joe Lovero and composer Jon Hugo Ungar, posted a short film of it on YouTube. According to the Post, Broadway producers saw the video and encouraged the creators to write a full-length musical.
The reading also featured as Dick Hallorann, who was played by Scatman Crothers in the film.
"The Shining" centers on Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who accepts a position as the off-season caretaker of the historic Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. His family accompanies him, including his son Danny, who possesses "the shining," an array of psychic abilities that allow him to see the horrific past of the hotel.
