Wesley, a new musical featuring extensive puppetry, is coming to New York later this summer.
Running June 11-July 18 at Times Square's Theater Center, the show will officially open June 25. Inspired by Stacey O鈥橞rien鈥檚 best-selling memoir Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of a Bird and His Girl, the musical was created by composer and lyricist Scott Steidl and book writer Mark Hantoot, who has also provided additional lyrics. The New York premiere will be directed by Mary Duncan.
Originally published in 2008, Wesley the Owl spent five weeks on The New York Times Bestseller List and became an international phenomenon, published in multiple languages and countries, including Italy, Brazil, China, Korea, and Germany. It tells the story of Casey, a gifted young rock musician who steps out of the spotlight and into an extraordinary lifelong bond with an injured barn owl named Wesley.
The New York cast will feature Andrianna Ayala (Proving Up) as Casey and Daniel Sanchez as Wesley, with Christa Lisette Beveridge (Die Fledermaus), Tara Dougherty (Les Mis茅rables), Ashley Huber (Die Fledermaus), Jack Kehoe (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Christopher Kirby Saunders, Nathan Myers (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), and Maya Pierce (Hair).
The creative team will include set designer Germ谩n C谩rdenas-Alaminos, costume designer Bailey Hammett-Colwell, projection designer Camilla Tassi, puppet designer Austin Phillips, and assistant director Jacob Heacock.
