The Highline Ballroom will shut its doors after 12 years, according to a by the venue鈥檚 owner, Steven Bensusan. 鈥淥ur landlord has decided not to renew Highline Ballroom鈥檚 lease,鈥 he wrote. 鈥淔or over a year we were led to believe that a renewal was imminent, however it is how clear that the landlord has other plans for the building. This is obviously a growing trend within the New York real estate market impacting various entertainment venues and businesses.鈥
The live performance space, located in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, alternated as a nightclub and upscale concert venue. It played host to numerous concerts and benefit events from the Broadway community, including the popular Broadway Sings series, as well as solo concerts from Tony winners LaChanze, Lena Hall, John Gallagher Jr., Duncan Sheik, and Tony nominee Constantine Maroulis.
Major names from the music industry played the venue, including Amy Winehouse, Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Adele, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, and Justin Bieber.
Bensusan said plans are underway to re-open the Highline Ballroom, and that the owners are currently looking at new venues in the Chelsea/Meatpacking District.
A final show date and programming will be announced soon.
