New York City's East 9th Street is now officially named Terrence McNally way, honoring the late playwright and book writer of Ragtime, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and many more. McNally lived on the East Village street for 24 years, penning many of his prolific works there.
The unveiling ceremony of the street's new sign featured speeches from Tony Award-winning producer and husband of the late McNally, Tom Kirdahy; executive director of the Terrence McNally Foundation Santino DeAngelo; and New York City Council Members Carolina Rivera and Eric Bottcher.
A handful of actors read excerpts from his play, with Tony winner Jonathan Groff reading from And Things That Go Bump in the Night, Francis Jue reading from Love! Valour! Compassion!, and Tony winner Donna Murphy reading from Master Class. Caissie Levy and Tony winner Brandon Uranowitz performed 鈥淥ur Children鈥� from Ragtime and Brian Stokes Mitchell performed "Make Them Hear You" from Ragtime鈥攖hey were accompanied by composer (and McNally's frequent collaborator) Stephen Flaherty. A special voice recording from composer John Kander was also played for the crowd to hear.
