Robyn Hurder and Max Clayton share very few moments together on the stage of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where they鈥檙e both wowing audiences nightly in Moulin Rouge!. But that hasn鈥檛 stopped them from becoming this season鈥檚 hottest social media stars together.
鈥淔ans at the stage door love the two of us together,鈥� Clayton says. 鈥淎nd that makes me so happy because, yeah, we鈥檙e laughing and having fun, and if we can share that with someone else, that鈥檚 the goal.鈥�
Both Clayton and Hurder delight in sharing their friendship on Instagram, and fans have flocked to the content. But Hurder is quick to point out that, as entertaining as it is, it serves a very real function: to keep them both sane in the midst of eight shows a week.
鈥淚t鈥檚 so physically demanding on every single person that鈥檚 in it,鈥� says Hurder, who opens Act 2 with a crowd-pleasing tango that comes close to stopping the show. 鈥淎nd there are days when we hit a Saturday night, and it鈥檚 rough. And that鈥檚 when Max will be like, 鈥極K, so tonight we鈥檙e going to play Chubby, Chubby, Chubby Chipmunk. And we鈥檒l stuff our faces with marshmallows and go live [on Instagram].鈥� And I鈥檓 like, 鈥榊es, this is what I needed!鈥� And this is apparently what everybody else needed, because we get delivered bags of marshmallows now.鈥�
Their bond is so immediately evident that it comes as a surprise to find out the duo only met two years ago, at a Moulin Rouge! lab. Since then, they鈥檝e performed the musical in Boston and now on Broadway, with a quick stint in A Chorus Line at City Center鈥擟layton as Don, Hurder as Cassie鈥攕andwiched in between.
Their infectious enthusiasm for each other and the show is buoyant, as is their mutual respect for one another鈥檚 talents.
鈥淚 wish we could do every show together,鈥� Clayton says. 鈥淭o just know that there鈥檚 a slice of home in the building. The second you walk in it鈥檚 like, 鈥極h, Robyn鈥檚 here too!鈥� We get to kind of experience all of it together, which has been so much fun.鈥�
鈥�Can we just do every show together? Hurder asks. 鈥�Damn Yankees, and I鈥檒l be Lola and Max will be Joe Hardy! I鈥檝e been pretty shameless about that on Instagram.鈥�
