BREAKDOWN
THE EFFECT
SYNOPSIS: The Effect tells the story of a clinical drug trial to test a new anti-depressant. Two participants in the trial are deeply drawn to one another, to the frustration of the two doctors in charge. As their medication doses increase, the participants wonder whether the feelings they are experiencing come from their true selves or whether they are simply a result of the medication they are testing. Prompted by their intense feelings, they push boundaries, leading to dramatic consequences, but also to true love.
SEEKING:
Tristan: Male. Mid 20s-Early 30s. Any Race. One of the drug trial participants. Shabby, charming, sexy. Boyishly impulsive with a sense of danger or temper underneath it all. From a working-class background, possibly with a troubled childhood, which he covers up with a playful warmth. This role requires physical intimacy and stage combat, including kissing, grappling, and removal of top layers of clothing. An Intimacy & Fight Director will be present to choreograph these scenes.
Connie: Female. Mid-20s. Any race. Intellectual and intelligent, thinks everything through before taking any action. Can come off as nervous and awkward at first. From a middle-class background, she is a graduate student in a relationship with a professor. This role requires physical intimacy and stage combat, including kissing, grappling, and removal of top layers of clothing. An Intimacy & Fight Director will be present to choreograph these scenes.
Dr. Lorna James: Female. Mid-40s. Any race. Extremely intelligent and holding tightly to control to ward off the darkness of her history of severe depression. From a middle-class background, she's a true professional (or always trying to be), leading with a warm detachment.
Dr. Toby Sealey: Male. Mid-40s. White. A charming womanizer who is extremely bright and ambitious. He is both good at his job and has never really needed to be to get ahead. Life comes easily to him, but he is driven to help people for whom that is not the case. From an upper-middle class background, he is optimistic and passionate.
