Even in the summer season, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week:
Carnegie Hall presents All American Freedom Day: Renewing Passion for Freedom and Democracy, a Juneteenth celebration, hosted by Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes Jr, and featuring LaChanze as M.C. June 19. The event will include performances by gospel group Take 6, pianist Joseph Joubert, and more.
The Orchestra of St. Luke鈥檚 annual Bach festival continues at Carnegie Hall June 20 with countertenor Hugh Cutting in a performance of Bach鈥檚 cantata 鈥淰ergn疟gte Ruh," as well as excerpts from operas by Handel.
The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra makes its final Carnegie Hall appearance for the season June 22, presenting the fourth act of Verdi鈥檚 Otello with tenor Russell Thomas as Otello and soprano Angel Blue as Desdemona. The concert will also include Bernstein鈥檚 Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Tchaikovsky鈥檚 Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, and a new work by Matthew Aucoin.
Ring in the summer solstice with On Site Opera鈥檚 Opera in the Garden at the West Side Community Garden June 21. The outdoor concert will feature excerpts from Mozart鈥檚 The Magic Flute. The following week, On Site Opera will return to the garden for a concert of excerpts from Bizet鈥檚 Carmen. Both concerts are free.
American Ballet Theatre opens its 2023 summer season June 23 with the New York premiere of Christopher Wheeldon鈥檚 Like Water For Chocolate. The ballet, with a score by Joby Talbot, concerns the familiar themes of family, forbidden love, and food. Performances continue through July 1.
June 22, Mark Morris Dance Group鈥檚 Dance for PD will offer a free inclusive dance class at Lincoln Center鈥檚 Damrosch Park. The dance class, designed to be accessible for people with mobility concerns, will include both seated and standing options.
