Sheryl Lee Ralph, The DIVA Foundation, and Richard E. Waits are co-presenting an NYC reading of Melda Beaty's new play Coconut Cake April 8, with their eyes set on a Broadway future for the project.
The reading will feature a cast including Duane Foster, Richard E. Harris, Lawrence Evans, David Sitler, and Waits.
Centered on male friendship through the lens of age, race, and love, the work is inspired by Beaty's grandfather, who had a standing breakfast appointment with several friends at a local McDonald's.
The April 8 reading will also include a real coconut cake, baked by Stanley Wayne Mathis.
The work has previously played five regional productions, including runs at Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, North Carolina Black Repertory Theatre, Hattiloo Theatre, and The Black Rep.
