Composer/lyricist/bookwriter Holly Gewandter, director , choreographer Jennifer Weber, associate musical director Ian Axness and a cast of eight performers will "explore the visual storytelling aspect of this gender-twisted, cross-dressed, cross-cast new musical based on the fairytale classic," according to press notes.
The ten-day residency will culminate in a presentation open to the public June 6.
In Gewandter鈥檚 reimagining of the romantic fable, Cinderella "goes to the ball disguised as a man, and the Princess falls in love with her. This groundbreaking love story between two women who risk everything for each other ultimately delivers its timely message 鈥 'Lovers all deserve to have their Happily Ever Afters.'"
鈥淢ASS MoCA鈥檚 residency program offers a unique opportunity for us to develop specific sections of the show,鈥 stated creator Gewandter. 鈥淲e鈥檒l be focused on the opening, ball scenes and 鈥榪uest鈥 sequence,鈥 added director Katz.
鈥淓ven after all these years,鈥 Gewandter said, 鈥渁lthough there have been a number of plays and musicals addressing gay male issues, there have been precious few depictions on stage of lesbian relationships. A musical with two women falling in love as its central narrative is long overdue. I鈥檓 very excited to work with Darren and Jenn to refocus the story in a way that questions society鈥檚 assumptions about gender.鈥 Seating for the public performance will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
