Antonio Banderas is bringing another musical to Spain, following his theatre company Teatro del Soho CaixaBank's earlier productions of A Chorus Line, Company, and Godspell.
This time, the stage and screen star is directing a new staging of Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim, and Jule Styne's Gypsy, which begins performances October 17 at the Malaga theatre. Newly released photos from a recent press event offer a good look at the unique revival, which seems to have taken some style cues from Bob Fosse and Chicago. Marta Ribera is leading the company as Rose, with the company also including Lydia Fair茅n as Louise, Carlos Segu铆 as Herbie and Uncle Jocko, Laia Prats as June, Carmen Conesa as Tessie Tura, Marta Valverde as Mazeppa, Chemari Bello as Rose's Father and Mr. Goldstone, Lorena Calero as Electra, Aaron Cobos as Tulsa, Sonia Gasc贸n as Electra, along with Paco Morales, Hugo Ruiz, Marina Albaiceta, Andrea Buret, Oscar Bustos, Paula Diaz, Marina Esp铆ldora, Beautiful Exum, Maria Gago, Jesus Gonzalez, Javier Manente, Marcos Olano, Bego帽a 脕lvarez, Rita Barber, Andr茅s Navarro, and Germ谩n Torres. Swings Diana Bonafau, Andreu Mauri, and Ana Dom铆nguez round out the company. Casting is by Marc Montserrat-Drukker.
The Spanish production features music direction by Arturo D铆ez Boscovich, choreography by Jerome Robbins and Borja Rueda, script translation by Maria Ruiz, lyric translation by Roser Battle, scenic design by Alejandro And煤jar, costume design by Antonio Belart and Rafael Garrig贸s, lighting design by Juan G贸mez-Cornejo and Carlos Torrijos, sound design by Jordi Ballb茅, and video design by Joan Rod贸n and Emilio Valenzuela.
