The Metropolitan Opera premiere of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer's Moby-Dick was boldly launched upon the deep last night 鈥� and the reviews are in!

Based on the epic novel by Herman Melville, Moby-Dick stars tenors Stephen Costello as Greenhorn 鈥� the opera's version of Ishmael 鈥� and tenor Brandon Jovanovich as the obsessive Captain Ahab, who turns a whaling expedition into a single-minded quest for revenge against the white whale who took his leg. Baritone Thomas Glass played the first mate Starbuck on opening night, stepping in for Peter Mattei, who withdrew due to illness. Completing the principal cast are bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as the harpooner Queequeg, tenor William Burden as Flask, baritone Malcolm McKenzie as Stubb, and soprano Janai Brugger as the cabin boy Pip. Moby-Dick marks the second Met Opera credit for composer Jake Heggie. following Dead Man Walking in 2023; librettist Gene Scheer, following An American Tragedy in 2005; and novelist Herman Melville, following Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd, which was a repertory staple at the Met from 1978 to 1997. Moby-Dick features sets by Robert Brill, costumes by Jane Greenwood, lighting by Gavan Swift, projections by Elaine J. McCarthy, and movement direction by Keturah Stickann.

Performances of Moby-Dick continue through March 29. The Metropolitan Opera's 2024-25 season continues this month with revivals of Puccini's La Boh猫me, and Beethoven's Fidelio, with an all-star cast including sopranos Lise Davidsen and Ying Fang, tenors Magnus Dietrich and David Butt Philip, bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny, and bass Ren茅 Pape. Michael Mayer's new production of Verdi's Aidawhich premiered New Year's Eve, also returns this month with a new cast led by soprano Christina Nilsson and tenor Brian Jagde.
