Broadway Bares San Francisco has set a date for its eighth edition, to be titled Hex Appeal. The strip-a-thon fundraiser will be held June 15 at 1015 Folsom.
Benefiting Broadway Cares and the Richmond/Ermet Aid Foundation, Hex Appeal will take inspiration from such magical sources as the Arthurian legends, faerie lore, Bewitched, and Wicked. The evening will feature guest appearances from RuPaul's Drag Race star Lady Camden, illusionist Jack Alexander, cabaret star Leanne Borghesi, and Rockette Michelle Hammar.
The event is conceived and produced by Deb Leamy, and is being co-directed by Stacey Printz. Choreographers for the upcoming event include Dexandro Montalvo, Katira Arak, Chadd Behavior, Erwin Columbus, Christine Navarette, Ariel Sky (aka Kenneth Givens), JJ Ghera, Juliann Witt, and Brian Day.
鈥淲ith so much uncertainty in America, this show stands as an act of joy and resilience as much as it ever has," says co-producer Damien Beard in a statement. "Each year we've been growing, continuing to bring fun to San Francisco and the queer community. In a time when embracing difference is a radical act, we鈥檙e excited to return to S.F. and show the world we'll keep doing this for as long as we can. Together, our performers, sponsors, and community are making a difference in the lives of countless individuals, which is especially important with how hard our trans, drag, and LGBTQ+ communities are being hit this year."
Last year's event, titled FilmStrips, raised more than $100,000, with the lifetime total for Broadway Bares San Francisco now exceeding $440,000.
The West Coast event is an off-shoot of NYC's Broadway Bares, created in 1992 by Jerry Mitchell as a way to raise awareness and money for those living with HIV/AIDS. Mitchell and six of his friends danced atop a New York City bar and raised $8,000 in Broadway Bares鈥 first iteration. Last year鈥檚 NYC edition raised $2.26 million, bringing Broadway Bares鈥 total to more than $28.7 million for Broadway Cares.
