Broadway vet Jawan M. Jackson (Motown, Ain't Too Proud) will join Off-Broadway's Ceremonies in Dark Old Men for the production's final week at Theatre at St. Clement's. Jackson will succeed Calvin M. Thompson as Blue Haven beginning June 23, with Thompson playing his final performance June 22. The run continues through June 29.
Elder's play is set in 1950s New York, centering on a widowed father, a barber who used to be a vaudeville performer whose life is thrown into turmoil when his daughter's long-standing resentments come to a head as his two sons' criminal enterprise unravels.
Jackson will join a cast led by Norm Lewis, and also featuring Felicia Boswell, James Foster, Jr., Morgan Siobhan Green, Jeremiah Packer, and Bryce Michael Wood. Casting is by Robin Carus.
The work, a Pulitzer Prize nominee, premiered Off-Broadway in 1969 via Negro Ensemble Company, which is co-presenting this revival with Peccadillo Theater Company and Eric Falkenstein.
The production features scenic design by Harry Feiner, costume design by Isabel Rubio, lighting design by Jimmy Lawlor, and wig design by Jeff Knaggs. April Ann Kline serves as production stage manager, and Josh Iacovelli is production manager.
The piece is created by real-life dance champions Candace H. Caplin and Ronny Dutra, with choreography by Dutra and consultation by U.S. Ballroom Champion Edward Simon.
