Prior to announcing the winner for Best Play at the 71st Tony Awards June 11, John Lithgow (a two-time Tony winner himself) walked the red carpet to discuss his Broadway debut 44 years ago.
“My Broadway debut, at age 27, was March 7, 1973 and I won a Tony Award on March 25,� Lithgow recalls on the red carpet. “I must have the record for the quickest award following a Broadway debut in history.�
That year, Lithgow received the Best Featured Actor in a Play Tony for The Changing Room; in 2002 he won for Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Sweet Smell of Success. He has also been nominated four other times.
The talented comedic actor has picked up her third Tony nomination.
