The Broadway production of Redwood, starring Tony winner Idina Menzel, yesterday, and Menzel shared a heartfelt statement about the news .
Previously slated to continue through August 17, the production鈥檚 final performance will now be May 18. At the time of closing, it will have played 17 previews and 127 regular performances. The show was one of 13 productions left empty handed when nominations for this year's Tony Awards were announced yesterday, and becomes Broadway's first casualty of bad luck with the honors.
"Creating [Redwood] with Tina Landau and Kate Diaz has been my proudest professional accomplishment," writes Menzel. "It is an all-female-led team, who are fearless risk-takers and gorgeous human beings. I will be eternally grateful to our stunning cast whom I love so friggin鈥� much. I鈥檒l be singing Kate鈥檚 music for years and years to come. You are all my family. Making music and telling this beautiful story with you has been the highlight of my career. In fact, being back in NYC with the entire Broadway community at the Nederlander, of all places, is my 'little Idina鈥檚' dream come true over and over again."

Menzel co-conceived the musical with director, book writer, and co-lyricist Tina Landau. The score features music by Diaz and lyrics by Diaz and Landau. A cast recording is set for a May 13 release, as previously reported.

The cast also includes De'Adre Aziza as Mel, Michael Park as Finn, and Zachary Noah Piser as Spencer, newly joined by Khaila Wilcoxon as Becca. Standbys Daniel Brackett, John Hemphill, Veronica Otim, and Jessica Phillips round out the company. Casting is by The Telsey Office's Patrick Goodwin.
Menzel stars as Jesse, a woman who finds herself at a crossroads in a Northern California redwood forest after a life-altering event.

The production also features scenic design by Jason Ardizzone-West, video design by Hana S. Kim, costume design by Toni-Leslie James, lighting design by Scott Zielinski, sound design by Jonathan Deans, vertical movement and choreography by Melecio Estrella of BANDALOOP, and orchestrations and arrangements by Diaz, all reprising their work from the La Jolla world premiere. New for the Broadway bow is music supervisor Tom Kitt and music director Julie McBride.
