Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck were named the winners of this year's Best Choreography Tony Award at the June 8 ceremony at Radio City Music Hall, winning for their work on Buena Vista Social Club. It's the third career win for Peck and the second consecutive, following a 2024 win for Illinoise and an earlier win for Carousel; and the first for Delgado, who made her Broadway debut with Buena Vista Social Club.
"As a Cuban-American daughter of immigrants, I would like to thank my entire family for your sacrifice and unconditional encouragement to follow my dreams and pursue an artistic path," said Delgado on stage while accepting the honor. "And to our daughter Lucia, our forever guiding light, we love you. I'm overwhelmed with gratitude. Gracias."
The win is the third for the show tonight, following earlier wins for its sound design (by Jonathan Deans) and orchestrations (by Marco Paguia). The musical went into the evening as one of three shows tied to be the most nominated productions of the seasons鈥攁long with Death Becomes Her and Maybe Happy Ending, each with 10 total nominations. Including a non-competitive Special Tony Award given to the show's band (a Tony Awards first), the show was technically the most Tony honored of the season going into tonight's ceremony. Buena Vista Social Club is both the name given to this extraordinary group of musicians and the album, recorded in just seven days in 1996. The trio of Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos Gonz谩lez, American producer and guitarist Ry Cooder, and British producer and label owner Nick Gold assembled an impromptu group of Cuban musicians in Havana鈥檚 1950s vintage EGREM studios. The album would become a worldwide phenomenon: awarded a Grammy in 1997 and, at over eight million copies, outselling any other record in the same genre. The acclaim of the album has elevated the artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rub茅n Gonz谩lez, and Omara Portuondo) to superstar status and inspired an award-winning film by Wim Wenders.
The producing team is led by Wolf, John Styles, Jr., Barbara Broccoli, Atlantic Theater Company, Viajes Miranda, LaChanze, Yazbek, and John Leguizamo. Allan Williams is executive producer.
