The musical is based on the popular 2003 Paramount Pictures film about down-and-out rock guitarist Dewey Finn, who takes a job as a substitute teacher. But instead of sticking to the syllabus, he teaches his kids about the glory of rock, organizes them into a rock group and enters them in a Battle of the Bands � much to the displeasure of the school principal.
Joining as Dewey Finn and as school principal Rosalie Mullins are as Ned, as Patty, as Katie, as Marcy, as Mason, as Tomika, as Freddy, as Zack, as Billy, Jared Parker as Lawrence and as Summer. Based on the movie script by Mike White, School of Rock has a book by  and direction by . The stage musical features some songs from the film, with the rest of the score composed by Lloyd Webber (The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar) and (Sister Act, Love Never Dies).
