Sunset Blvd. Wins 2025 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical

The Jamie Lloyd-directed revival of Sunset Blvd. won the 2025 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical at the 78th Annual Tony Awards, held at Radio City Music Hall June 8.

Others in the category included Floyd Collins, Gypsy, and Pirates! The Penzance Musical.

Sunset Blvd. received seven Tony nominations May 1, making it the most nominated revival of the season: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Nicole Scherzinger), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Tom Francis), Best Direction of a Musical (Lloyd), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Jack Knowles), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Adam Fisher), and Best Orchestrations (Lloyd Webber and David Cullen).

The revival of the Lloyd Webber musical officially opened October 20, 2024, following previews that began September 28 at the St. James Theatre. The musical is currently playing an extended limited engagement at the St. James through July 20.

Lloyd's minimalist production arrived on Broadway after an acclaimed London engagement. Four of the West End stars transferred to Broadway: 2024 Olivier winner Scherzinger as Norma Desmond, 2024 Olivier winner Francis as Joe Gillis, 2024 Olivier nominee Grace Hodgett-Young as Betty Schaefer, and Olivier winner and 2024 Olivier nominee David Thaxton as Max Von Mayerling.

The revival is a startling departure for the traditionally opulently designed musical, featuring a minimalist set and ample use of live video. Images of the curtain call, with Scherzinger covered in blood, went viral on social media when the production premiered in London. Equally notable is Francis' performance of the musical's title tune, which begins backstage, continues outdoors, and returns to the theatre's stage just in time for the song's conclusion.

Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard (with a book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton) is based on the 1950 Billy Wilder movie of the same name, which featured Gloria Swanson as the reclusive Norma Desmond who falls in love with an unlucky writer—Joe Gillis—who happens upon her home by accident. William Holden played Gillis in the film, which was directed by the late Billy Wilder. Swanson, Holden, and Wilder all received Academy Award nominations for their work.

The Broadway staging has set and costume design by Soutra Gilmour, choreography by Fabian Aloise, music supervision and musical direction by Alan Williams, lighting design by Jack Knowles, sound design by Adam Fisher, video design and cinematography by Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom, hair and makeup design by Cheryl Thomas, intimacy coordination by Ann James, U.S. casting by Jim Carnahan and Jason Thinger and U.K. casting by Stuart Burt. Johnny Milani is the production stage manager, and 101 Productions, Ltd. serves as the general manager.
