Tony Awards With Her Second Tony Win (and Fourth Nomination in a Row), Kara Young Credits Playwrights

Young has received her second Tony Award in a row for Purpose.

With four Tony nominations four years in a row and two back-to-back wins, Kara Young feels "blessed" to work with "some of the most incredible writers of our generation," she revealed in an exclusive interview with 半岛体育 just moments after winning the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play.

When asked what her secret is to choosing roles that earn her a Tony nod, she credits playwrights: "Lynn NottageMartyna Majok, C.A.  Johnson, NSangou Njikam, Jeff Augustin, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Douglas Lyons...I feel incredibly grateful to be working with these playwrights. And I feel like when I read them and when I'm experiencing them and doing them, it's as if they are helping to change the world, something is shifting something inside of someone, therefore their chemistry is changed." "Theatre is such a sacred, divine space like that of a church, except there's people from all over who have no relation to each other that come from different classes or socioeconomic backgrounds, of different races, different genders, and they sit together for a set period of time and listen to a story...I feel grateful to be a part of that sacred space," said Young.

Purpose is currently running at the Helen Hayes Theatre through August 30.
