The arc of artistry is a marathon, not a sprint. As Tony winner Jonathan Groff shared on a March 31 visit to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, his journey to Just In Time on Broadway has taken more than half a decade of preparation.
"Ted Chapin asked me to do a night of [Bobby Darin's] music at the 92nd Street Y eight years ago," Groff recalled. "And I went on YouTube, and went down this rabbit hole. I started looking at clips of Bobby Darin, and these black-and-white clips of him were coming out of the computer and grabbing my heart. He has this primal, passionate鈥攈e was like a supernova as a performer and as a person. I became completely obsessed with him, incredible director Alex Timbers joined us at the Y, and ever since then we've been developing the show."
While on the show, Groff also shared the story of his first headshot with Colbert, as well as the festivities surrounding his 40th birthday, and how a silent meditation retreat bookended his Tony-winning experience in Merrily We Roll Along. Check out video of Groff's full interview above.
