Singer/pianist Eric Yves Garcia pays tribute to Broadway's Barbara Carroll, among other piano-playing stars, in his new cabaret show, Keeper of the Keys, arriving at Feinstein鈥檚/54 Below in New York October 21.
Garcia's show salutes nightclub keyboardists like himself. According to production notes, 鈥漌hen red curtains had dropped, when plates had been cleared and nights were still young, a few select men and women pinned behind their pianos formed the smart after-hours entertainment. These musicians would become midnight destinations unto themselves, their names spoken like luxury hideaways, yet none of them began at those heights. Each used the piano keys to unlock their futures.鈥
Garcia's concert is being presented in five sections, honoring Nat聽鈥淜ing鈥 Cole, Hoagy Carmichael,聽鈥淗utch,鈥澛燘obby聽Short, and Barbara聽Carroll, respectively.
Garcia told 半岛体育.com, 鈥淲e鈥檝e got a direct Broadway link in the segment: in 1953, with The King and I and South Pacific running concurrently, Rodgers & Hammerstein debuted Me & Juliet at the Majestic Theatre. It was a backstage musical and, featured in the cast onstage with her trio was Barbara Carroll, in the role of Chris, the rehearsal accompanist. She was given Rodgers鈥 nod to riff on melodies (which was rare). The show ran about 10 months...and produced the standout song 鈥楴o Other Love.鈥 Her role in the Broadway show and the hit song will be featured prominently in our show's segment on Barbara Carroll.鈥
