Initial casting is set for the New York return of cult favorite Heathers the Musical, which will play New World Stages, where the show originally made its Off-Broadway debut. The limited engagement, as previously reported, will begin June 22 and play through September 28.
Andy Fickman, who staged the original Off-Broadway production and subsequent U.K. engagements, will direct. The production will be based on the version that recently wrapped up its tour in the U.K.
Newly announced for the production are & Juliet Tony nominee Lorna Courtney and Back to the Future's Casey Likes, who will play, respectively, Veronica Sawyer and Jason "J. D." Dean. Additional casting鈥攂y The Telsey Office's Rachel Hoffman and Jimmy Larkin鈥攚ill be announced at a later time.
鈥泪鈥檓&苍产蝉辫;so very thrilled to have Lorna Courtney and Casey Likes starring as Veronica Sawyer and J.D. in our new production of Heathers The Musical,鈥 says Fickman in a statement. 鈥淭heir passion, energy, and incredible talent will bring these iconic characters to life in ways that will resonate profoundly with audiences. I couldn't be more excited to see them make these roles their own. Each step of the auditioning process, they continued digging deeper and deeper into the writing and we marveled at the discoveries they made and cannot wait for audiences to experience them as well.
"We have been blown away by all the amazing and talented performers who auditioned for us this round. We are building an exciting company for Heathers, including several cast members we found at our open call, so I cannot wait till we can reveal the rest of this year鈥檚 class of Westerberg High. They are all truly gonna make it beautiful.鈥
鈥淧laying Veronica is like being given the keys to a world of contradictions," says Courtney. "She's strong, vulnerable, comedic, and heartbreaking all at once. It鈥檚 a character that demands you find your voice, even as the world burns around you. To play her is to find the power in being yourself, no matter how messy that is.鈥
鈥淚鈥檓 really thrilled and honored to play the role of J.D.,鈥 adds Likes. 鈥淭his role and story have meant a lot to people since the film came out, and ignited again since the creation of the musical, and I鈥檓 just looking forward to joining and hopefully honoring the legacy of that, while making it my own. Getting to dive into the complicated, sometimes dark, sometimes hopeful nature of J.D. is not only something I鈥檓 excited to do, alongside the amazing Lorna Courtney, but also something I hope to surprise audiences with.鈥
Heathers the Musical follows Westerberg High student
Veronica Sawyer, who's on track to become one of the most popular girls
in school after befriending the beautiful but cruel Heathers, only to
meet a mysterious teen rebel who changes everything.
Based on the 1989 film by Daniel Waters, Heathers the Musical features a book, music, and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe. The musical adaptation premiered with a sold-out run in Los Angeles in 2013, and transferred to New World Stages in 2014. The authors revised the show for a 2018 West End run, before playing two national tours and a West End encore engagement; the revision includes several new songs and script changes that will now be heard in New York for the first time in the forthcoming run.
