Tony Awards How The Costumes Were 'Over-Engineered to the Extreme' in The Picture of Dorian Gray

Costume designer Marg Horwell won the 2025 Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play for her work on The Picture of Dorian Gray. In the Tony Awards Press Room, Horwell reflected on the immense group effort that allowed her to create a wide variety of period inspired costumes to be quick changed on and off of star Sarah Snook, who won the Tony for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play tonight.

"I had a lot of people working with me on that stage," Horwell laughed. "There are so many tiny components to make it as easy as possible, so that Sarah can flow and never be interrupted by a change. These costumes are over-engineered to the extreme, because it was my priority to make clothes that were beautiful, but also fully functional for Sarah and the team. So much thought went into every stitch, in order to build a world where this was possible eight times a week. It took so much design, and so much craft, from every single member of the team."
